What is the purpose of Umbrella Liability Insurance?
Arkansas is not exempt from the litigious nature of today's society. How
much attorney advertising do you see on television, hear on the radio or see in newspapers and on billboards? The primary purpose
of Personal Umbrella Liability Insurance is to provide additional protection for you should you be sued.
What does it cover?
A typical Personal Liability Umbrella policy provides:
Protection for claims of personal injuries or property damage
caused by you, members of your family/household, or hazards on your property,
for which you are found legally liable
Personal liability coverage for incidents which occur on or off your property
Additional protection above your basic auto policy for auto-related liabilities
Protection against non-business-related personal injury claims, such as
slander, libel, wrongful eviction, and false arrest
Legal defense costs for a covered loss, including lawyers' fees and associated
court costs Personal
umbrella liability insurance is designed to protect you
and your family against a catastrophic lawsuit or judgment. It
provides expanded coverage and increases the amount of your primary
liability protection beyond the basic coverage provided under your
homeowners, renters and auto insurance policies.
Most
homeowners insurance provides a minimum of $100,000 liability coverage (the coverage that protects you
when people are injured or property is damaged due to circumstances in which you or your family are responsible). The minimum liability
protection for auto insurance in Arkansas is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
Most
insurance companies will allow you to purchase higher liability limits on both your homeowners or automobile insurance. Maximums
are typically $500,000 for homeowner policies and $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident for automobile insurance.
Are
there any requirements?
Most companies require you to have higher liability limits on your
auto and homeowner insurance policies before they will issue a Personal Umbrella Policy. On average, those limits are $300,000
for Coverage D on your homeowner policy and $100,000 per person with $300,000 per accident on your auto policy.
