Can
I buy life insurance on someone else's life?
You
may if you have an insurable interest in that
person's life. Generally speaking, you have an insurable interest
in your spouse, child,
parent, business partner, or someone who owes you money.
Who
can I name as beneficiary of my life insurance policy?
Basically, you can name any person or organization as a beneficiary.
Some people name a church or college or some other philanthropic
organization they would like to support. Usually, however, a spouse,
child or other family member is named as beneficiary.
What
is a Contingent Beneficiary?
A contingent beneficiary is named to receive the proceeds of your
life insurance policy in the event the primary beneficiary is no
longer living. Married couples with children usually name the spouse
as primary beneficiary and the children as contingent beneficiaries.
Will
my beneficiary have to pay income tax on the death benefit?
No, life insurance proceeds are not taxable for income tax purposes.
Is
my life insurance policy affected by my will? Does it have to be
probated with my estate?
No, life insurance proceeds pass directly to your beneficiary outside
the scope of your estate. Life insurance proceeds are added to your
estate for the purpose of determining any Estate Tax owed. However,
the IRS says that only the top two percent of persons in the United
States are subject to Estate Tax.
Can
I sell my life insurance policy?
Viatical settlements do allow you to sell your
policy. We recommend extreme care in this matter. Be sure you have
checked the background
on any company who offers to purchase your life insurance policy.

Insurance
Department.
