You live in Arkansas, holder of three infamous records for the month of January. Up until January 21, 1999 the most tornados ever recorded for one day in January in ANY state was 13. On that date, Arkansas saw 56 tornadoes touch ground during those 24 hours. Also shattered was the record number of tornadoes for ANY DAY in January. The previous record was 39 and included the total number or tornadoes in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas. Our third record is for the most tornados recorded in any state during the MONTH of January; previously Texas held the record of 25.

But January is not during tornado season, and Arkansas is not in Tornado Alley. Welcome to Arkansas. Let's talk about the most important number associated with January 21, 1999. The city of Little Rock suffered $1.3 BILLION in damage.

It's Not Just Tornadoes in January

Homeowners and renters have more events to think about than tornadoes in January. Tornadoes, fire, flood, earthquake or other physical damage can occur on any day at any place in Arkansas. Thunderstorms, high winds and ice storms also cause damage -- and inconvenience -- in Arkansas. Each year thousands of Arkansans spend time without electricity.

Being Prepared

Being prepared for damage or inconvenience goes way beyond having proper insurance coverage. Be sure to read our Helpful Tips section about record keeping and ways to protect your records.

You should have a HOME EMERGENCY KIT. Your kit should include items like:
Flashlight and batteries
Candles and matches
Water bottles (enough for 3 gallons per family member)
Non-electric can opener
Portable Radio
Fire extinguisher
First aid kit
Blankets
Ponchos or other rain gear
Disposable camera
Copies of your insurance policies in a waterproof package
Contact phone numbers for your insurance agent and company
